From Apprentice to Master
Meet Kate Nuttall. She began her journey into interior design at 18 when she became intrigued by the design department while starting an apprenticeship at a commercial kitchen design firm.
After eight years at the commercial kitchen design firm, Kate decided to expand her interior design knowledge by studying at the National Design Academy, where she enrolled in the Professional Interior Design Diploma. She loved the diploma so much that she late pursued the BA (Hons) Interior Design Top-Up while working full-time.
Since graduating, Kate has worked on exciting projects alongside Michelin-starred chefs and secured a role at ABDA Design Consultants. Congratulations, Kate!
What first sparked your passion for design?
I first entered the world of design at 18 when I began an apprenticeship with a commercial kitchen design firm. I was immediately intrigued by the design work and approached the directors to request a transfer to the design department. It was here that I began learning about design, working with architects and interior designers daily. The more time I spent alongside these amazing teams, the more I wanted to expand my knowledge and delve deeper into interior design.
After eight years in commercial kitchen design, I decided to join the National Design Academy (NDA) to undertake the Interior Design Diploma. I loved the diploma so much that I used my experience and other qualifications to embark on the BA (Hons) top-up degree. I was able to study while working full-time, and I can confidently say that broadening my design knowledge has pushed me professionally, enabling me to produce better designs and deliver outstanding projects.
Who is your biggest design inspiration?
Besides my amazing design team, I would say Barlow and Barlow and Studio Ashby.
How would you describe your style in 3 words?
My design style can be encapsulated in three words: eccentric, maximalist, and experimental. I thrive on pushing boundaries, embracing bold and unconventional elements, and creating spaces that are both visually stimulating and richly layered with meaning and texture.
What made you apply to the National Design Academy?
I applied to the National Design Academy to make me a better all-round designer and to enable me to broaden my professional capabilities in the world of interior design.
What is the most unexpected thing you have learned from the course?
I really enjoyed learning about the more technical side of interior design including fire regulations and DDA requirements.
What was your favourite course module and why?
My favourite module was Module 9b: Hotel Design. We had a beautiful old building just off Hyde Park to work with and I felt so proud of not only the interior design but the business model that I managed to create for the client.
What's your favourite project that you have worked on?
I’ve been very fortunate to work on some incredible projects, including work on Grade I and II listed buildings, working alongside Michelin star chefs and creating show-stopping front of house kitchens.
What advice would you give to potential National Design Academy students?
Do it! I honestly loved every moment. Once you find your groove and routine, it isn’t even half as daunting as you think it will be.
Now that you have finished your course, what are you doing next?
Since finishing my degree, I have moved to an incredible design company, ABDA Design Consultants, who offer both interior design and commercial kitchen design. At ABDA, I get to combine my 11 years of commercial kitchen design with my new interior design skillset.
