Rebecca Jane Smith

What made you want to get into interior design?

I was in my mid-twenties when I decided I needed a career change. I’ve always had a passion for interior design, and after stints at Laura Ashley and then in accounting, I took the leap and joined the National Design Academy to turn my lifelong dream into reality.

Who is your biggest design inspiration?

I would say my 3 favourite designers who have consistently inspired me are Jamie Beriestain, Kelly Wearstler and Greg Natale . These 3 designers are maximalists who are not afraid to use bold colours and patterns, interesting forms and individual furniture and art pieces.

If you could describe your style in 3 words?

  1. Maximalism
  2. European
  3. Art inspired interiors

What was your favourite module in this course?

My favourite module was the independent study brief. This was a self-directed project in which I was able to express my own style and my love for commercial projects, especially within the hospitality industry.

How was your experience with the course and Virtual Learning Studio (VLS)?

The course was really well planned out, all of the modules were very informative and covered all aspects of the Interior Design industry. The VLS was easy to use and navigate around. Doing an online course still allowed me to work, earn an income and fit a proper schedule around my life.

Who was your tutor and how did you find the communication and support?

My tutor was Stephen Matthewman-Knowles, he was great from start to finish and really supported me through the duration of the course. His feedback was really helpful and constructive.

Now that you’ve finished your course, what are you doing next?

I am working as a freelance Interior Designer in Manchester. At the moment I am working on a beauty salon and spa, transforming the reception areas and treatment rooms.

Who would be your dream client or what would be your dream project?

My dream project would be a commercial-based project—either a boutique hotel or restaurant—where I could collaborate with the client to build and grow the brand identity and develop a design concept that aligns with the overall brand. I have always been keenly interested in the hospitality industry for its diversity and commitment to exceeding customer expectations.

What projects are you proudest of and why?

The Bonson & Moss  (Last Module Independent Study)

In this project, I transformed an old fabric factory into a boutique hotel with an adjoining restaurant. This project reflected my personal style of “Art-Interiors.” The brief was centred around a hospitality company called ArtFarm, and the design featured famous paintings from the owner’s collection and wall murals inspired by legendary painters.

Sustain

Sustain was a restaurant I designed for a sustainable design brief. The primary focus of this project was on sourcing sustainable design solutions and products, which are increasingly important within the industry today.

Hypnos

Hypnos involved redesigning a hotel in London, where I redeveloped the reception and lobby area as well as an executive suite. This project drew inspiration from the Proper Hotel in Santa Monica, designed by Kelly Wearstler.
